Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe originated in France. It’s a variation of the French croquet-monsieur sprouted in 1930s to 1960s. The recipe looks simple as it is only composed of fried ham and cheese. Nonetheless, the taste and the dish itself are intricately superb and inviting.
The dish has different names in the American cookbook. They call it French Sandwich, French toasted Cheese Sandwich, or Toasted Ham Sandwich. You can create your own version, but you should not forget to have ready your jelly to dip it in.
This is composed of grilled Gruyere cheese and lean ham. This was first served in 1910 in an expensive café in Paris. Don’t be surprised to still see this amazing recipe in countries such as France and Switzerland since it’s indeed a popular snack to these folks.

Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
- 6 slice white bread
- 2 slice cheese
- 2 slice ham
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 2 pcs fresh eggs
- Spread mayonnaise on one slice of the bread
- Next the boiled ham on the same side and top with the other slice of bread.
- Spread with mayonnaise again and then cheese.
- Put another slice of bread on top.
- Slice diagonally.
- Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl.
- Add in the evaporated milk, honey and salt.
- Heat a pan in and set to low and add some butter.
- Dip the slice of bread and toast on the pan.
