Buttered Tahong Recipe - Even though they live in a clean water, it is still best if you will clean and wash it before cooking. Clean foods usually result to a delicious dish.
Philippines is a country rich with water resources like seafood because it is an archipelago surrounded with water. Tourists who came and visit the country enjoy eating seafood delicacies in different restaurants around the country.
Eating seafood is very healthy because it gives our body the minerals and vitamins that we need.
Seafoods are a good source of iodine, protein, vitamin b12 and many more so it is a must for all of us and so it is being cooked and prepared in every household in the Philippines.
However, eating too much can raise someone's cholesterol level so I would personally be mindful of consuming more than the recommended amount.
One seafood that is unusually called poor man’s shellfish can be found plentifully in the Philippines. It is usually found in saltwater and freshwater habitats. They are of course edible and safe to be eaten by the whole family.
But why are Mussels or Tahong called a poor man’s shellfish? Can only a poor man eat it? or because it is sold cheaply in the markets?
Mussels usually inhabit fresh waters like the lakes, ponds, and rivers. Mussels grow abundantly and maybe that is a reason why they are sold cheaply.
If you are looking to buy cheap Tahong then head over to Cavite or coastal area, I heard from a friend they culture them and are sold cheap during harvest season.
Another thing to consider when buying is the red tide season where these delicious sea shells are poisonous, keep an eye of the news and forecast by the food authority or ask the vendor themselves.
They would usually eat a sample right in front of you to prove they are safe to be eaten.
